Their Story

Ethan Carroll Hardin was a sergeant in the United States Army. He served with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Polk, Louisiana. According to military records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On January 7, 2011, Sergeant Hardin was killed in Charkh, a district in Afghanistan's eastern Logar Province. The Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile fire. A contemporaneous news report from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette stated he died from wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.

Hardin's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By early 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations against Taliban and other militant groups, particularly in provinces surrounding Kabul like Logar.

His death was reported by multiple news outlets in his home state. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette noted he was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart, according to the website Military Times.

Sergeant Hardin is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Park in Fayetteville, Arkansas. His name is also inscribed on Panel W9, Line 103 of the Afghanistan Conflict Memorial Wall at the National Infantry Museum in Fort Benning, Georgia.
