U.S. Army Specialist Agustin Gutierrez, 19, of San Jacinto, California, was killed in action on March 29, 2007, at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Agustin Gutierrez was a 19-year-old soldier from San Jacinto, California. He served with Company B, 782nd Combat Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His military service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On March 29, 2007, Specialist Gutierrez was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on guard duty at Bagram Airfield, the main U.S. military base in Afghanistan. The attack occurred during a patrol of the base's perimeter.
Gutierrez died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The year 2007 saw a significant increase in U.S. troop levels and combat operations against a resurgent Taliban.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in local California media. He was posthumously promoted from Private First Class to Specialist.
Specialist Gutierrez is remembered on memorials at Fort Bragg and in his hometown. A scholarship fund was reportedly established in his name at his former high school in San Jacinto.
