Their Story
Michael John Esposito Jr. was a 22-year-old soldier from Brentwood, New York. He served as a sergeant with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum, New York.
On March 18, 2004, Esposito was killed in Dehrawood, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, his unit was conducting a patrol when it came under hostile fire. He was one of two U.S. soldiers killed in the engagement.
Esposito's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2004, operations in the country's eastern provinces, including Paktika where Dehrawood is located, involved counter-insurgency missions against Taliban and al-Qaeda remnants.
The Department of Defense announced his death on March 20, 2004. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors. His family and community in Brentwood held memorial services.
Sergeant Esposito is memorialized on the 10th Mountain Division memorial at Fort Drum and on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the U.S. government. His name appears on the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America's remembrance rolls.
