Duffman, Scott Eric
Technical Sergeant Scott Eric Duffman, 32, was a U.S. Air Force Special Tactics combat controller from Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was killed by an IED near Kabul, Afghanistan, on February 18, 2007.
Their Story
Technical Sergeant Scott Eric Duffman was a combat controller assigned to the 24th Special Tactics Squadron, part of Air Force Special Operations Command based at Pope Air Force Base, North Carolina. Combat controllers are trained to deploy with elite units like U.S. Army Special Forces and Navy SEALs to direct close air support and conduct reconnaissance.
On February 18, 2007, Duffman was on a combat patrol near Kabul, Afghanistan. His vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED). He was killed in the blast.
Duffman's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The operation aimed to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban from power, evolving into a protracted counterinsurgency and nation-building effort.
According to Air Force statements, Duffman was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Valor, the Purple Heart, and the Air Force Combat Action Medal. His remains were returned to the United States.
He is memorialized on the Air Force Special Operations Command Memorial Wall and at the Special Tactics Training Squadron at Hurlburt Field, Florida. His name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Air Force Academy.
