Lance Corporal Victor Anthony Dew, 20, of Granite Bay, California, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on October 13, 2010.

Their Story

Victor Anthony Dew was born in 1990 and grew up in Granite Bay, California. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned as a rifleman to 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Pendleton, California. The battalion deployed to Afghanistan in the fall of 2010 as part of Regimental Combat Team 2.

On October 13, 2010, Lance Corporal Dew was killed during combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The Marine Corps stated his death was the result of hostile action. He was one of two Marines from his battalion killed that day; the other was Lance Corporal Irvin M. Ceniceros.

Dew's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in a major effort to secure key population centers in Helmand, including the district of Sangin, where Dew's unit was operating. The 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines sustained heavy casualties during this deployment.

Dew's body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors. His death was reported by local news outlets in the Sacramento area, and he was memorialized in his hometown. The Marine Corps posthumously awarded him the Purple Heart.

He is remembered on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Roseville Veterans Memorial Hall and is listed on the Honor Roll of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines. His name is inscribed on Panel 3R, Line 127 of the Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Riverside, California.
