Jefferson Donald Davis, 39, was a U.S. Army Master Sergeant from Watauga, Tennessee. He was killed in hostile action on December 5, 2001, in Khaneh Gerdab, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Master Sergeant Jefferson Donald Davis, 39, of Watauga, Tennessee, was a senior non-commissioned officer assigned to Company D, 2nd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The unit was among the first conventional U.S. forces deployed to Afghanistan following the September 11 attacks.

On December 5, 2001, Davis was killed during a mission in the village of Khaneh Gerdab, located in the mountainous Paktia Province near the Pakistani border. According to U.S. military records, his death was the result of hostile action, though the specific details of the engagement were not publicly disclosed in detail. He was one of the earliest American combat fatalities in the country.

Davis died during the initial phase of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began on October 7, 2001. The objective was to dismantle the Taliban regime and target al-Qaeda following the 9/11 attacks. Early operations in late 2001 involved Special Forces teams and CIA officers working with Afghan anti-Taliban militias in intense, close-quarters combat in eastern Afghanistan.

His death was reported by major news outlets, including The Washington Post and The New York Times, which listed him among the first U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal with Valor device for his actions.

Davis is memorialized on the Special Operations Memorial at Fort Campbell and is listed on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls maintained by the Department of Defense. His death marked one of the initial losses in a conflict that would continue for over a decade.
