Lance Corporal Nicholas Robert Anderson, 21, of Sauk City, Wisconsin, was a U.S. Marine killed in action in Afghanistan on March 13, 2006.
Their Story
Nicholas Robert Anderson was a 21-year-old from Sauk City, Wisconsin. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned as a rifleman to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, based at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe Bay.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Anderson died on March 13, 2006, while conducting combat operations in the Kunar Province of eastern Afghanistan. He was reportedly part of a Marine unit engaged in Operation Mountain Lion, a mission to disrupt insurgent networks and weapons caches in the volatile region along the border with Pakistan.
Anderson's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The mission in Afghanistan aimed to dismantle the al-Qaeda terrorist network and remove the Taliban regime that harbored it. By 2006, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the country's eastern provinces.
Following the announcement of his death, Anderson was remembered in his home state. The Wisconsin State Journal reported that flags were flown at half-staff in his honor. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart medal.
