Bakin Rijiya Book 1 Complete Hausa Novel

Bakin Rijiya Book 1 Complete Hausa Novel continues the emotional story of Hafsat Poojah and her elder brother Shammaz. This part reveals school changes, family secrets, jealousy, love confusion, and the beginning of a painful truth that may change Hafsat’s life forever.

Bakin Rijiya Book 1 Complete Hausa Novel English Translation

Hafsat was a beautiful young girl, fair in complexion and blessed with long hair. She was slim and still growing, being only fourteen years old. Her features were striking, with a long nose, bright eyes, and dark natural eyebrows. Her hair fell beautifully around her forehead in a way that made her look very attractive for her age.

At the exact time Shammaz had told her, she reached his car. She was wearing blue jeans and a red top, with a red veil covering her head. She looked very beautiful.

Without saying anything, Shammaz started the car and drove away.

When they got on the road, he said, “Poojah.”

Her heart suddenly dropped. Hearing him call her by that name made her unable to answer.

He held her hand and placed it in his.

“You heard me calling you, and you are ignoring me. Poojah is the name your friends call you, and do not forget, we are now friends, are we not?”

She smiled and said, “Sure, we are.”

He smiled again.

“What kind of phone do you want? You know I did not bring you a gift from abroad, so I will make up for it.”

In truth, Hafsat was not yet relaxed around him. She was still afraid of him. She smiled again and said,

“Any one is fine. I like any phone.”

He realized she was frightened, so he did not say anything more.

Hafsat Meets Haleemah’s Family

When they reached Haleemah’s house, Shammaz told Hafsat to go inside and greet Haleemah’s family. He said Haleemah would come out with her afterward.

Without argument, Hafsat entered the house.

She greeted from the entrance of the parlor, but no one answered her. So she entered. Hafsat naturally had little patience for manners.

When she entered, she saw that everyone was sitting in the middle of the parlor, talking among themselves. There were more than six young women and an older woman seated among them.

Everyone looked at her, but no one said anything.

Weakly, she said, “Good afternoon. I am looking for Aunty Haleemah.”

The older woman asked, “Who are you, girl? Do you not know how to greet?”

Hafsat looked at the woman and blinked slowly.

With difficulty, she said, “I tried to greet you people. I have been saying salaam since, but you ignored me.”

The woman was shocked by her words and stood up.

“Who are you, girl? What do you want with Haleemah?”

Annoyed, Hafsat replied, “Yaa Sham sent me to tell the mother of the woman he wants to marry, Haleemah, that she should come out so they can go where they are going.”

Just then, Haleemah came out.

She looked at Hafsat and asked, “What is this? Is everything alright?”

Hafsat only looked at her and said, “Yaa Sham is waiting for you outside.”

After saying that, she turned to leave without even looking at her properly.

Haleemah quickly ran after her, held her dress from behind, and lightly tapped her head.

She said, “Whose child are you, and why are you talking to people with such bad manners? Is this how messages are delivered?”

Immediately, Hafsat’s eyes filled with tears.

She said, “I am from the same father’s house as Yaa Sham. I am his only sister, Hafsat. Is there anything else?”

Haleemah quickly changed her attitude.

“Allah Sarki, Hafsat Kulele. How are you? By Allah, I did not recognize you. I thought you were one of those troublesome neighborhood girls. So you are my big sister. Umma, look, this is Sham’s sister.”

She looked at her mother and winked, silently warning her to adjust her words.

The mother forced a smile and said, “Oh, so it is her. You know, I understand better when people say Shammaz. When she said Shaam, I did not know who she meant. You said her name is Hafsat? Welcome, my daughter. Come and sit close to me. We were talking too much; we did not hear your greeting.”

They began talking to her excessively. One person said one thing, another said another thing. When she and Haleemah were about to leave, they brought many gifts for her.

But from that first visit, even though Hafsat was still young, the house did not please her. She did not like Haleemah’s sisters and their behavior.

Hafsat Dislikes Haleemah

Inside the car, Haleemah kept trying to chat with Hafsat, but Hafsat refused to relax. She was tense and uncomfortable. Her only thought was how to stop Yaa Sham from marrying this woman.

In just a short time, she felt hatred for Haleemah and her entire family.

They went to buy the phone, and Shammaz bought Hafsat the same type of phone he bought for Haleemah. Hafsat immediately noticed that Haleemah was not happy about it.

Haleemah looked at him and said, “Boo, why will you buy this little girl such an expensive phone? Honestly, you people are spoiling her too much.”

Hafsat noticed that Shammaz himself was not pleased with Haleemah’s comment because he ignored what she said.

After that, he bought them ice cream and chicken, then took Haleemah back home.

When Haleemah entered the house, she removed her veil and fell into the middle of the parlor where her family was gathered.

She said, “Umma, by Allah, there is a problem. That troublesome sister of his is our problem. He does not hesitate to do anything for her. You saw the amount of chicken and ice cream he bought for us. What annoyed me most is that he bought the same phone for both of us, as if the girl is my co-wife. Where is that little girl and where is holding such an expensive phone? By Allah, this is pure foolishness. We must deal with her, because if we do not, she will make life difficult for us and stop us from achieving our goal.”

Her mother nodded and said, “We will deal with that girl. Leave her to me. She has no shame at all, but she is dealing with us.”

Hafsat’s School Interview

The next day, without knowing it, Poojah entered the interview for students seeking admission into SS3 instead of SS1. Surprisingly, she came first among about thirty-two students.

When they investigated the matter, they confirmed that she had passed on her own ability. She was asked to start school on Monday.

When she arrived on Monday and saw that she had been placed in SS3, she became surprised.

She told them, “There has been a mistake. I am supposed to be in SS1.”

But they insisted that the exam she wrote was for SS3 and that she was the overall best candidate.

So she stayed alone as a young girl among older students. Everyone teased her until she became uncomfortable.

When she returned home, she went straight to Yaa Sham’s section and cried while explaining everything to him.

He asked, “What kind of foolish girl enters an exam that is not hers?”

She wiped her tears and said, “Yaa Sham, I was tired of waiting. When I heard them call batch three seniors, I entered. I did not know it was for SS3.”

He was silent and told her to go until the next day.

He tried everything to convince the school that she was too young, but they insisted they would not move their overall best student backward. Another exam was given to her, and she passed everything clearly. So Shammaz had no choice but to allow her to remain there.

When she returned home, he called her and asked how she knew SS3 work.

She explained that in her school library, she read books from nursery level up to SS3. Whenever she did not understand something, she would ask their teacher or the principal. If the principal did not know the answer, he would connect her with the subject teacher.

Shammaz was satisfied with her explanation. He wished her well, and she went inside.

Yaa Sham did not listen to Elham when it came to education. He even got Hafsat an extra lesson teacher. She would not return home until 5 p.m. After Isha prayer, her Islamiyya teacher would come to teach her and Mero until 9 p.m.

Because of this, Hafsat had almost no free time.

That was how things continued until WAEC and NECO came. By then, Hafsat was fifteen years old. Her school friends were all older than her. Her closest friend, Huda, was eighteen.

She and Huda became very close. Huda guided Hafsat toward good behavior because she was sensible. Hafsat also improved a little. Though her pampered character did not completely disappear, she reduced her rudeness toward people.

Shammaz and the Family

Yaa Sham was the eldest child of Alhaji Muhammad Gaya and Hajiya Nasara. After his birth, they had almost lost hope of having another child because even before he was born, they had struggled for a long time.

They loved Shammaz deeply, and even after Hafsat was born, their love for him did not reduce. However, they placed a great amount of affection on Hafsat.

Abba Haris, who was Daddy’s younger brother from the same father and mother, also loved her greatly. Their parents had four children: two boys and two girls. The girls were Hajiya Maryam and their youngest, Hajiya Harira.

Abba Haris had seven children: Surayya, who was the eldest, then the twins Hassana and Hussaina, followed by Khairiyya, Auwal, Abduljabbar, and Abdurqadir.

Maryam had only two children, Bunyameen and Yusuf.

Harira had five girls: Saratu, Sa’adatu, Shamsiyyah, Sha’awanatu, and the youngest, Safiyyah. She had no son.

The entire extended family loved one another. There was hardly any hypocrisy or serious disagreement among them. Everyone tried to be patient with the other. They were all educated and financially comfortable. Muhammad was the eldest among them and also the richest.

Their mother, whose name was Hafsat, was still alive with her husband, Malam Abubakar Gaya. They were among the people who pampered Hafsat the most because they loved the girl deeply.

Shammaz and Haleemah

Shammaz had loved Haleemah since secondary school. At that time, he was in SS3 while she was in JSS3.

Haleemah was no longer a little girl; she was now twenty-seven years old. Shammaz had spent almost eight years outside the country and returned as a qualified heart doctor. Even before traveling, he had already finished school for almost two years.

Whenever he returned on holiday, he and Haleemah were always close.

But Haleemah’s family had very little shame. They did not respect her father. They were seven girls, along with their mother, who was also shameless and careless. They had reduced their father to someone with no respect because he was not strong enough to control them.

They lived irresponsibly and provided for themselves and their mother through questionable behavior.

It was not truly for Allah that Haleemah insisted on Shammaz alone. He was deeply in love with her, but she had other sides to her life.

Hafsat’s Strange Feelings

Hafsat sat on the stairs leading to the upper part of the house, pressing her phone. But her mind was not on the phone.

She did not understand why her heart was so restless because of Yaa Sham. If she did not see him for a whole day, she would feel as if a strong fever had covered her.

When it passed twelve noon and he had not entered the main house, she stood and headed toward his section.

She knocked gently. He came and opened the door.

He looked at her in surprise and asked, “Poojah, what is it?”

She smiled slightly and said, “I thought maybe you had not eaten breakfast, and I did not see you enter the house. So I came to check if everything is alright.”

The girl surprised him greatly, because he still had not fully understood her new calmness.

He cleared his throat and said, “Since this marriage talk started, I sometimes feel like I am not even hungry. I forget food. There are too many things on my mind, and I am all alone.”

She forced a smile. For no clear reason, her heart dropped when she heard him mention the marriage. She did not understand why she felt that way, even though she cared nothing for the woman he intended to marry.

She said, “Yaya, you should stop staying hungry. Do you not know that if ulcer catches you, you will not be able to do the wedding activities? What should I cook for you?”

He smiled and asked, “What can you cook, Daddy’s Lele?”

She made a pampered face and said, “Yaya, since you returned, you have changed my whole life. I now cook with them at home. I can cook almost anything for you, even snacks.”

He was surprised by the way she was behaving with him. For days now, he had not understood his sister’s new attitude.

He looked at her and said, “Go and bring me whatever has been cooked. Then come back and help me choose the decoration style we will use for the dinner.”

She did not speak. She turned away, feeling a strange pain in her heart.

She could not even bring the food back to him. As for Shammaz, his mind was already on his phone, searching online for decoration styles to print out because he truly looked forward to the wedding.

Huda Visits Hafsat

When Hafsat went to her room, she lay down and could not do anything.

Later, Huda called her.

“Huda, what is it?” Hafsat asked.

“Everything is fine, little friend. I will come to your house with my fiancé around 4 p.m. so you can meet him. He returned from the UK recently, and he has been insisting that he wants to see this Poojah I talk about more than anyone.”

Hafsat only smiled and said, “Okay.”

Throughout the afternoon, she did not come out. Mommy was in Abuja.

When Huda arrived, she entered Hafsat’s bedroom and saw her sitting there.

Huda looked at her and said, “Poojah, are you alright? Since I called you, your voice sounded strange.”

Hafsat hissed lightly and said, “Huda, by Allah, I hate hearing about Yaa Sham’s wedding. Whenever I hear it, I feel as if my body is dying, and I lose joy in my life.”

Huda looked at her carefully and said, “Hafsat, are you alright? What is your concern with your brother’s marriage? You are supposed to be happy for him. Have you seen how much you have changed? Did you even eat today?”

Hafsat closed her eyes and opened them slowly. By then, tears had gathered in them.

She said, “Huda, by Allah, I am not well. Maybe jinn have touched me. I have not been able to eat since one month before this wedding. I also cannot stay without seeing Yaa Sham. Once a day passes without seeing him, I feel feverish. And when we are together, I do not want us to separate. Huda, could it be that jinn have touched me?”

Huda studied Hafsat’s words deeply.

After a while, she sighed and asked, “Poojah, are you truly from the same mother and father as Yaa Sham?”

Hafsat frowned slightly and said, “What kind of question is that, Huda? By Allah, we are from the same mother and father. There is no doubt. After his birth, they had lost hope of having another child, then Allah brought me.”

Huda nodded, her heart becoming heavy.

It was clear to her that Hafsat was to be pitied, because there was no doubt that she had developed feelings for her brother. Huda knew that whatever the matter was, there was something hidden underneath. Allah never tests His servant with something beyond what he can bear.

But outwardly, Huda pretended and said, “Hafsat, your hatred for the woman your brother wants to marry is too much. Is that why you cannot even eat?”

Hafsat only smiled, because she herself did not know that what was in her heart was love.

At night after Isha, their Islamiyya teacher came. Hafsat’s mind was not with her at all. She came out walking like someone whose heart was heavy. Every movement she made was filled with thoughts of her brother.

In the compound, she saw him on the phone, laughing and speaking happily. One look at him showed that he was very happy.

Suddenly, she found herself feeling a kind of anger she could not explain. She was sure he was speaking with Aunty Haleemah.

Before she knew it, tears began falling from her eyes. She turned away. She could not go to the lesson anymore.

She bumped into Mero while crying.

Mero looked at her in surprise and asked, “Kulele, are you alright? What is wrong with you?”

Hafsat did not say anything. She went upstairs, entered her room, closed the door, and broke into heavy tears. She did not know what was happening to her.

Allah Sarki Hafsat. She was still young, only fifteen years old, and she was falling into distress over something she could not understand.

That was how Hafsat became quiet and withdrawn. She lost weight, became darker, and no longer looked like herself. Things continued that way until the time of her brother’s wedding arrived.

Hafsat Speaks to Her Father

She found Daddy and Mommy sitting in the parlor and chatting. She went and sat beside Mommy without saying anything.

Her father looked at her and asked, “My Hafsatu Kulele, what has been wrong with you these days?”

She only smiled and said nothing.

Mommy said, “It is maturity catching up with Hafsat. Can you not see the new calmness that has come over your Kulele?”

Her father laughed and said, “Daddy’s girl, you are still too young for university. Which school will you go to, or should I enroll you in a computer school?”

She smiled again and said, “Daddy, I wrote JAMB. I scored almost 240. I am now grown enough for university. Please, if I get admission, let me go.”

He said, “No problem, Daddy’s girl. May Allah grant you admission. Which course do you want?”

She replied, “I filled Education English and Pure English. Whichever one I get, I will study.”

He prayed for her.

Before anyone else could speak, Yaa Sham entered. He knelt and handed his father an envelope. Inside were beautiful invitation cards.

Daddy smiled happily, looked at his son, and said, “May Allah put goodness in it, my son. On the day of the reception, we will also hold the opening ceremony of your clinic because that will be better.”

For no clear reason, Hafsat could not control herself when she saw the wedding invitation card. She burst into tears.

Everyone’s attention turned to her, and they began asking what was wrong. But she ran to her room and fell on the bed, crying loudly.

She placed her hand on the place where she felt a painful burning in her chest.

That was how Shammaz entered and found her. He lifted her and held her close, feeling pity for her.

Softly, he asked, “Little sister, what happened to you? Who touched you that made you cry like this?”

Crying, she said, “I do not know, Yaa Sham. Every time your wedding is mentioned, I feel as if I will die and leave this world. If I spend a day without seeing you, I do not feel well. When I see you happy because of the wedding, my heart begins to boil.”

She pointed at her chest.

“Yaa Sham, by Allah, I do not want you to marry her. See here? It burns me. I feel pain as if I will die. Since one month before your wedding, I lost my peace. Whenever I remember it, I cannot even eat. I do not know what is wrong with me. Yaa Sham, do you not think jinn have touched me? Why was I not concerned about you before? Why did I not care when you were not near me? Why did I not watch your movements from the window before? Why, Yaa Sham? The way I feel about this wedding, if it happens, I will die.”

He stared at her silently until she finished speaking. Her words almost scattered his thoughts. If what his heart was telling him was true, then there was a serious problem ahead.

To him, this girl was his sister from the same mother and father. Even if that was not the case, he had no interest in anyone except his Haleemah.

With careful wisdom, he looked at her and said, “Indeed, Hafsat, it must be jinn. Have you ever seen where a sister from the same mother and father feels jealous or angry because her brother wants to marry? You should know that they are the ones who want to come between us. They do not want to see us loving each other. But Allah’s will is stronger than theirs. So be patient and keep praying, do you hear? Insha Allah, they will leave you. And do not tell anyone about this matter again.”

She only nodded.

Mero, who had been hiding by the door, held her chest and whispered words of shock. She had already understood before now that Hafsat loved Shammaz. If that was true, then the wind was disturbing dry grass.

From what Yaa Sham said, Mero understood that he did not want anyone to know and force him to marry Hafsat. It seemed he preferred that the love destroy her rather than change his own plan.

In her heart, Mero decided that she would tell Mommy the truth, even if it cost her life.

Mero Tells Mommy

After Isha, Mero went to meet Mommy in her room. After greeting her, she sat and faced her.

She said, “Mommy, there is an important matter I want us to discuss about Hafsat because there is a problem.”

Mommy looked at her without giving the matter much importance and said, “I am listening.”

Mero said, “Mommy, I know I am not the only one who has noticed that Kulele is no longer calm or happy. She does not eat, and she no longer even looks the way she used to.”

Mommy only nodded.

Mero continued, “The crying you saw earlier was not ordinary. It was jealousy over Yaa Sham’s marriage. I heard her telling him with her own mouth.”

Mero explained everything to Mommy, including what she had heard when Hafsat spoke to her friend and the question the friend asked about whether Yaa Sham was truly her brother from the same mother and father.

Mommy became silent, thinking deeply about Mero’s words. Truly, if Hafsat did not love him, nothing would make her feel this way.

And if that was the case, then the matter was serious, because love is love, but self-love is greater than everything.

With that, Mommy stood and went to Daddy’s section.

At that same time, Hafsat had prepared herself to go and beg Daddy to allow her to go to Abba Haris’s house. She did not want to stay around the wedding noise and guests.

Mommy sat and explained everything to Daddy.

In anger, Daddy said, “Come on, Nasara! Did we not sit together and beg the family to hide forever the matter that Shammaz and Hafsat are not from the same mother and father? How can a girl love her own brother? And what does Hafsat even know about love? What has she experienced in life?”

Mommy became angry and said, “Come on, Alhaji. Why do you show the world that you love Hafsat, but deep down it is not so? Do not forget that between her and Sham, who did you give birth to from your own body? She is the only daughter Allah gave you. How can you become this angry over something that can be solved? Since she loves him, why not join them together in marriage and everyone can rest?”

Daddy glared at her and said, “By Allah, even if not for Sham, I will not give Hafsat in marriage now. Women have no sense sometimes. Do not even show her that you know she loves him. Let her continue her madness. But there is no marriage between them. He has someone he loves, and she should leave him alone. Do not let me hear this matter again.”

Hafsat, who was outside, heard everything. She held her chest and said quietly,

“So we do not share the same father, Yaa Sham? Then who is your father? What is my connection with you? Love? What is love? Is this what my friend always talks about concerning her boyfriend? Is it true that I love Yaa Sham? Have I brought trouble upon myself? Indeed, there is a great task ahead of me.”
