A Daren Farko Book 1 Complete Hausa Novel English Translation
The lawyers and other workers responsible for sitting in court to listen to the case were all seated in their proper places. The spectators were also present, along with the parents of the young woman whose case was being heard.
The situation was deeply pitiful. Anyone who looked at the faces of almost nine out of ten people in the courtroom would see serious sadness, especially those directly affected by the matter: her parents and relatives.
Justice Usman Muhammad slowly raised his head and looked at the woman standing in the place where accused persons were kept. Both of her hands were in handcuffs.
She was wearing a black dress with a black hijab over her head. She had no head tie on. Her eyes were terribly red from excessive crying. She did not want to raise her head to look at anyone because she hated herself so much.
Even when the judge called her name, she did not lift her head. She only answered in a weak, broken voice that could barely be heard.
The judge called again, “Fatima Musa.”
She replied, “Yes.”
He asked, “Are you the one who killed Dr. Abubakar Saddik, popularly known as Dr. Khalifa?”
Fatima remained silent.
The judge repeated the question three times, but she did not say anything. The courtroom became so quiet that it felt as if no one was inside.
Everyone kept looking at Fatima and the judge, waiting to hear what she would say. But Fatima closed her mouth and remained silent, as if Allah had created her without the ability to speak.
Fatima Is Questioned in Court
Justice Muhammad Bamaina spoke in a softer tone.
He said, “Fatima, this court is accusing you of killing your husband, Dr. Khalifa, because you were found with his body. That is why we want you to explain the truth of what happened with your own mouth.”
He continued, “You are not a baby, and you are not deaf. You can hear what we are saying, and you can speak. If you killed him, tell the court and explain why you did it. If you did not kill him, then say something and explain yourself.”
For the first time, Fatima raised her head and looked around the courtroom.
Her eyes met her mother’s eyes. Her mother had placed her hand on her cheek in deep sorrow. Even from the distance between them, Fatima could tell that her mother was crying bitterly and shaking her head.
Fatima then looked at the judge.
Suddenly, she felt her head spinning. Her legs began to shake, and they could no longer carry her body. She collapsed right there in the courtroom.
Immediately, Justice Usman M. Baina adjourned the case to the third day of the following month, by Allah’s will.
The courtroom became noisy and confused. The cries of Fatima’s parents and relatives filled the place. Their sister was in a terrible condition, yet there was nothing they could do to help her.
As they watched helplessly, some female police officers lifted Fatima and rushed her out because her breathing had become fast and heavy, as if it might stop.
Ummi’s Sorrow
In the evening, around five o’clock, Ummi was sitting beside a mat. She rested her head on her knees and cried as if her soul would leave her body.
Goggo Abu was beside her, also wiping her tears in deep sadness.
Even if someone did not know them, seeing their condition would be enough to make that person cry with them. Without any explanation, anyone would understand that only a heavy sorrow could bring such tears.
Malam Musa entered with prayer beads in his hand. He greeted them and stood by the doorway, watching them for about five minutes before coming closer.
Allah bless this humble servant. He was a gentle man who did not attach too much value to worldly matters. His face was filled with pity and heartbreak as he looked at them, but he could not speak immediately.
After a while, Goggo Abu wiped her tears and forced herself to be strong.
She said, “Mallam, you are back? Welcome.”
He raised his hand and said, “I do not want greetings from you people as long as your eyes will not stop shedding tears over something that will not benefit us. Will this crying cure the trouble we have found ourselves in?”
Goggo Abu said, “Mallam, what should I do? Since this thing happened, Ummi has not stopped crying. I have tried every kind of comfort, but this girl has refused to stop. I no longer know what words to say that will make her accept patience.”
