Their Story
Wael Al-Dahdouh was a veteran Palestinian journalist and the Gaza bureau chief for the Al Jazeera Media Network. He had worked for the network for over two decades, reporting on multiple conflicts in the region and becoming a prominent figure in Palestinian media.
According to Al Jazeera, Al-Dahdouh was killed on December 15, 2024, when an Israeli airstrike hit a house in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. He was reportedly sheltering there at the time. The strike also killed at least one other person.
Al-Dahdouh's death occurred during the intense conflict that began in October 2023 between Israel and Hamas. The war followed a major attack by Hamas on southern Israel. The subsequent Israeli military campaign in Gaza resulted in high casualties, including numerous journalists.
The Committee to Protect Journalists documented that Al-Dahdouh was among more than 100 media workers killed in the region since the war began. Al Jazeera issued a statement holding Israel responsible for his death, a charge Israeli officials did not immediately comment on. His killing drew condemnation from press freedom organizations globally.
Al-Dahdouh had become a symbol of resilience for many Palestinians after his wife, two children, and a grandson were killed in an Israeli strike in October 2023. He continued reporting afterward, saying it was his duty. His death underscored the extreme dangers faced by journalists working in Gaza.
