Mustafa Thuraya
Mustafa Thuraya was a Palestinian journalist working for Al Jazeera. He was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Khan Younis, Gaza, on January 7, 2024.
Their Story
Mustafa Thuraya was a journalist and cameraman for the Qatar-based news network Al Jazeera. He was part of the network's team covering the war in the Gaza Strip, reporting from the southern city of Khan Younis.
On January 7, 2024, Thuraya and fellow Al Jazeera journalist Hamza Wael Dahdouh were traveling in a car when it was struck by an Israeli missile. The attack occurred on the road between the cities of Khan Younis and Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. Both journalists were killed instantly.
The incident took place during the war that began on October 7, 2023, following a Hamas-led attack on Israel and the subsequent Israeli military campaign in Gaza. The Committee to Protect Journalists reported that the first ten weeks of the conflict were the deadliest period for journalists it had ever documented.
The Israeli military stated it had targeted a 'terrorist' in the area and was reviewing the incident. Al Jazeera Media Network condemned the strike, calling it a 'targeted killing' and a violation of international law. The network held Israel fully responsible for their deaths.
Thuraya's death brought the number of Al Jazeera staff killed in the conflict to at least four. His work, and his death, were cited by press freedom organizations as part of a pattern of extreme danger for journalists reporting from Gaza.
