Maximino Rodr?guez Palacios
Maximino Rodríguez Palacios was a freelance Mexican journalist. He was shot and killed on April 14, 2017, in La Paz, Baja California Sur.
Their Story
Maximino Rodríguez Palacios was a freelance journalist and reporter for the news website Colectivo Pericú, based in La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur state. He was known locally for his coverage of crime and social issues, often reporting on police activities and organized crime.
On the afternoon of April 14, 2017, Rodríguez was driving his car in La Paz when he was attacked. According to state prosecutors, assailants in another vehicle fired multiple shots at him. He was struck and died at the scene. His vehicle crashed into a nearby building. Authorities reported finding at least 15 bullet casings.
His killing occurred within a broader pattern of violence against journalists in Mexico, a country consistently ranked among the world's most dangerous for media workers. Journalists reporting on crime and corruption, particularly at the local level, face significant risks of retaliation from criminal organizations and other actors.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) confirmed his death as a work-related killing. The state attorney general's office opened a homicide investigation. In the years following his death, CPJ and other press freedom groups have cited his case as emblematic of the impunity surrounding attacks on journalists in Mexico.
Rodríguez's death is listed on the memorials of international press freedom organizations. His case, like many others, remains under investigation by Mexican authorities, with no public reports of convictions for his murder as of late 2023.
