Cecilio Pineda Birto

Cecilio Pineda Birto was a freelance reporter who covered crime and local politics in the violent state of Guerrero. He worked primarily for regional outlets and maintained a social media presence, often posting videos about criminal activity and corruption. Pineda had survived a previous attempt on his life in 2015.

On the afternoon of March 2, 2017, Pineda was at a car wash in Ciudad Altamirano. According to reports, a gunman arrived on a motorcycle and shot him multiple times. The assailant fled the scene. Pineda, who was waiting for his vehicle, died at the location.

Pineda's killing occurred within a broader pattern of violence against journalists in Mexico, particularly in regions dominated by organized crime and corruption. Reporters covering crime, corruption, or local politics in states like Guerrero, Veracruz, and Tamaulipas faced extreme risks, including murder, with a high rate of impunity for the perpetrators.
