Edwin Antonio Matos Colon, a 42-year-old Master Sergeant from Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico, was killed in action on April 6, 2005, in Ghazni, Afghanistan, while serving with the U.S. Army's 25th Infantry Division.

Their Story

Master Sergeant Edwin Antonio Matos Colon was a U.S. Army soldier from Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 25th Infantry Division, Task Force Thunder, part of Combined Joint Task Force-76, based at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. According to military records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On April 6, 2005, Matos Colon was killed in Ghazni province, located in southeastern Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense announced he died from wounds sustained when his unit came under enemy small-arms fire during a combat operation.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By early 2005, operations were focused on counter-insurgency and stabilization efforts against Taliban and Al-Qaeda forces following the initial invasion.

Following his death, Matos Colon was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He was survived by his wife and children. His remains were returned to Puerto Rico, where he was buried with military honors.

Master Sergeant Matos Colon is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico. His name is also inscribed on Panel 9E, Line 127 of the Afghanistan Campaign Memorial Wall at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
