Levy, Christopher Phoenix Jacob
Lance Cpl. Christopher Phoenix Jacob Levy, 21, of Ramseur, North Carolina, was a U.S. Marine who died in Landstuhl, Germany, on December 10, 2011, from wounds sustained in Afghanistan.
Their Story
Christopher Phoenix Jacob Levy was from Ramseur, a small town in central North Carolina. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned as a rifleman to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 8, 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
Levy was wounded in action in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on December 6, 2011. According to Marine Corps statements, he was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) while on a dismounted patrol. He was evacuated from the battlefield and flown to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany for advanced trauma care, where he died from his injuries on December 10.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan launched in response to the September 11, 2001 attacks. In late 2011, Levy's unit was operating in Helmand, a southern province that was a major center of Taliban insurgency and a focal point for U.S. Marine Corps operations.
Levy's death was reported by the Department of Defense and local North Carolina media. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. His body was returned to North Carolina, and he was buried at Randolph Memorial Park in Asheboro.
He was remembered by his battalion commander as a dedicated Marine. In Ramseur, a local veterans' organization reportedly holds an annual memorial motorcycle ride in his honor.
