Ibrahim Aqil
Ibrahim Aqil was a senior commander of Hezbollah's elite Radwan Force. He was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, Lebanon, on September 20, 2024.
Their Story
Ibrahim Aqil was a long-serving member of Hezbollah, the Lebanese political and military organization. He rose to command the group's Radwan Force, an elite unit reportedly trained for cross-border operations. The United States Treasury had designated him for his alleged role in the 1983 Beirut barracks bombings.
On September 20, 2024, an Israeli airstrike targeted a building in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold. Aqil was reportedly inside the building at the time and was killed in the strike. The strike was part of a wider series of Israeli operations in Lebanon that year.
The strike occurred during a period of escalating hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza in October 2023. Cross-border exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah had become near-daily occurrences, marking the most significant fighting since their 2006 war.
Hezbollah confirmed Aqil's death in a statement, describing him as a commander. The Israeli military stated it had targeted Hezbollah military infrastructure and operatives in Beirut. The strike was widely reported by international media outlets.
As a commander of the Radwan Force, Aqil was considered a significant figure within Hezbollah's military structure. His death was seen by analysts as part of a targeted campaign against the group's leadership during the 2023-2024 conflict.
