Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was the Secretary-General of Hezbollah from 1992 until his death. He was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Dahieh suburb of south Beirut, Lebanon, on September 27, 2024.

Their Story

Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was born in Bourj Hammoud, Beirut, on August 31, 1960. He joined the Shia Amal Movement in his youth and was a founding member of Hezbollah in the early 1980s. Following the assassination of his predecessor, Abbas al-Musawi, in 1992, the 32-year-old Nasrallah was elected as the group's Secretary-General, a position he held for the rest of his life.

On September 27, 2024, an Israeli airstrike targeted a residential and office building in the Dahieh suburb of south Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold. The strike reportedly used bunker-busting munitions. Lebanese security sources and Hezbollah officials stated that Nasrallah was killed in the attack while in a secure location within the structure.

The strike occurred during a period of intense cross-border conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, which had escalated following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza in October 2023. For months, Hezbollah and the Israeli military had exchanged near-daily rocket, missile, and drone fire across the Lebanon-Israel border.

Hezbollah confirmed Nasrallah's death in a statement later that day, declaring three days of mourning. Supporters gathered in Dahieh, and condolences poured in from regional allies including Iran and Syria. The Israeli military stated the strike had eliminated the Hezbollah leadership figure responsible for directing attacks against Israel.

Nasrallah's death marked the end of a 32-year tenure during which he oversaw Hezbollah's evolution from a militia into a dominant military and political force within Lebanon. His leadership was defined by armed conflict with Israel, including the 2006 war, and deep involvement in the Syrian civil war. His successor, according to Hezbollah's bylaws, would be selected by the group's Shura Council.
