Brig. Gen. Abbas Nilforoushan
Brig. Gen. Abbas Nilforoushan was Deputy Commander for Operations of Iran's IRGC and the Quds Force commander in Lebanon. He was killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Dahieh suburb of Beirut, Lebanon, on September 27, 2024.
Their Story
Abbas Nilforoushan was a senior commander in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). He held the position of Deputy Commander for Operations of the IRGC and served as the commander of the Quds Force in Lebanon, a role that positioned him as Iran's primary military liaison to the Hezbollah movement.
On September 27, 2024, he was killed in an Israeli airstrike that targeted a Hezbollah headquarters building in the Dahieh suburb of south Beirut. The strike reportedly also killed Hezbollah's Secretary-General, Hassan Nasrallah. According to reports from Iranian state media, Nilforoushan had been dispatched to Beirut by Iran's Supreme Leader to warn Nasrallah of an imminent threat.
The strike occurred during a period of escalating cross-border conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, following the outbreak of the Israel?Hamas war in October 2023. The conflict, involving near-daily exchanges of fire, represented the most severe hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah since their 2006 war.
Iranian state media confirmed Nilforoushan's death, and the IRGC issued a statement vowing retaliation. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi declared that the killing 'will not go unanswered.' Hezbollah also confirmed the death of its leader and other officials in the strike.
Nilforoushan had been sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury in 2022 for his alleged role in the violent suppression of domestic protests in Iran. His death removed a key figure in Iran's regional military coordination, particularly concerning its support for Hezbollah in Lebanon.
