Private First Class Christopher Alexander Horns, 20, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, was a U.S. Army Ranger killed in Afghanistan's Zhari District on October 22, 2011.

Their Story

Christopher Alexander Horns was a 20-year-old soldier from Colorado Springs, Colorado. He served as a Private First Class with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. The 75th Ranger Regiment is a special operations light infantry unit of the U.S. Army.

Horns died on October 22, 2011, in the Zhari District of Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile action. According to reports, he was killed during a combat operation in the district, a known insurgent stronghold in southern Afghanistan.

Horns was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the country's southern and eastern regions.

Following his death, the Department of Defense officially announced the casualty. He was posthumously promoted from Private to Private First Class. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs.

Private First Class Horns is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Pikes Peak Veterans Memorial in Colorado Springs. His name is also inscribed on the 75th Ranger Regiment's memorial at Fort Benning, Georgia, honoring Rangers who have died in combat.
