U.S. Army Sergeant Adrian Edward Hike, 26, of Callender, Iowa, was killed in action on November 12, 2007, in Bermel, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Adrian Edward Hike was a 26-year-old U.S. Army sergeant from Callender, Iowa. He was assigned to Troop A, 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, based in Schweinfurt, Germany, as part of the American deployment for Operation Enduring Freedom.
Sergeant Hike died on November 12, 2007, in the Bermel district of Afghanistan's Paktika province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was conducting a dismounted patrol when it came under enemy small-arms fire. He was killed during that engagement.
Hike's death occurred during a period of intensified conflict in Afghanistan. By 2007, Taliban forces had regrouped and were mounting a significant insurgency, leading to increased combat operations and casualties among U.S. and allied forces, particularly in the country's eastern provinces.
The Department of Defense announced his death the following day. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant. His awards reportedly included the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Adrian Hike is remembered on memorials in Iowa and at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings.
