Hamza Al-Dahdouh
Hamza Al-Dahdouh was a Palestinian journalist working for Al Jazeera. He was killed in an Israeli airstrike on January 7, 2024, in Khan Younis, Gaza.
Their Story
Hamza Al-Dahdouh was a Palestinian journalist and cameraman for the Qatar-based news network Al Jazeera. He was the son of Al Jazeera's Gaza bureau chief, Wael Al-Dahdouh, and had been reporting from the enclave during the intense conflict that followed the October 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas on Israel.
On January 7, 2024, Al-Dahdouh was traveling in a car with fellow journalist Mustafa Thuria, who was a video stringer for Agence France-Presse (AFP), near Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. Their vehicle was struck by an Israeli missile, killing both men. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the Palestinian press union confirmed the deaths as work-related.
The incident occurred during a period of heavy Israeli bombardment and ground operations in Gaza, which began after Hamas-led militants killed approximately 1,200 people in Israel and took more than 240 hostages on October 7. The subsequent Israeli military campaign resulted in widespread destruction and a high civilian death toll in Gaza, as reported by the Gaza Health Ministry.
Wael Al-Dahdouh, who had lost his wife, daughter, grandson, and another son in an Israeli airstrike in October 2023, publicly mourned Hamza. Al Jazeera condemned the killing, calling it a targeted attack. The Israeli military stated it was reviewing the incident, noting it targeted a terrorist operating an aircraft that posed a threat, but did not immediately provide evidence linking the journalists to militant activity.
Hamza Al-Dahdouh's death brought renewed international attention to the extreme dangers faced by journalists reporting from Gaza. According to CPJ, he was among more than 100 journalists and media workers killed in the region in the first three months of the war, making it one of the deadliest periods for journalists in recent history.
