Their Story
Christopher Obryan Grant was a 20-year-old Marine from Richwood, Louisiana. He served with the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (1/9), part of Task Force Belleau Wood, II Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Before deploying to Afghanistan, his service reportedly included assignments in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
On October 20, 2013, Grant was killed in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense stated his death resulted from hostile action. No further specifics regarding the incident were publicly released by the military.
Grant's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2013, the mission was in a transitional phase, with U.S. and coalition forces increasingly focused on training Afghan security forces as they prepared to assume full security responsibility.
Following his death, Grant's body was returned to Louisiana. He was buried with military honors at the Richwood Memorial Gardens cemetery. His family and community in Richwood held memorial services, and his name was added to the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day he died.
Lance Cpl. Grant is remembered on memorial walls at his former high school and by veteran organizations. His name is inscribed on the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines memorial at Camp Lejeune, which honors members of the unit killed in action.
