Their Story

Sergeant First Class Omar Wilfred Forde was a 28-year-old soldier from Marietta, Georgia. He served with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Combat Aviation Brigade, based at Fort Riley, Kansas. His military service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On December 18, 2013, Forde was killed in the village of Now Bahar, located in Afghanistan's Zabul province. According to U.S. military reports, his death resulted from a direct fire engagement with enemy forces. He was assigned to a unit operating as part of Task Force Archangel.

Forde's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The conflict was in its final years, with U.S. and NATO forces transitioning security responsibilities to Afghan National Security Forces. Zabul province was a known area of insurgent activity.

The Department of Defense announced Forde's death on December 20, 2013. He was posthumously promoted from Staff Sergeant to Sergeant First Class. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.

SFC Forde is remembered on memorial walls at Fort Riley and by veterans' organizations. Public records and casualty lists document his service and sacrifice.
