U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Kristoffer Bryan Domeij, 29, of San Diego, California, was killed by an improvised explosive device on October 22, 2011, in Zhari District, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Kristoffer Bryan Domeij was a senior non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Army's elite 75th Ranger Regiment, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. He enlisted in 2001 and served as a Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC), a role responsible for directing close air support. According to the Army, he deployed 14 times to combat zones in Iraq and Afghanistan, a figure reported as a record for a Ranger at the time of his death.

On October 22, 2011, Domeij was on a combat operation in the volatile Zhari District of Kandahar Province, a Taliban stronghold. He was killed by the detonation of an improvised explosive device (IED). Two other Rangers, First Lieutenant Ashley White and Private First Class Christopher Horns, were killed in the same blast during a mission to capture a Taliban insurgent.

Zhari District was a focal point of the International Security Assistance Force's (ISAF) efforts in southern Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. The district, a known center of Taliban activity and IED production, saw intense counter-insurgency operations aimed at disrupting militant networks and securing population centers.

The Army posthumously promoted Domeij to the rank of Sergeant First Class. He was survived by his wife and two daughters. His death was reported by major news outlets, which noted his extensive deployment history. Memorials were held at his base in Washington and in his home state of California.

Domeij's legacy within the special operations community is tied to his documented deployment record and his expertise as a JTAC. His name is inscribed on the Ranger Memorial at Fort Benning, Georgia, and he is remembered in unit histories for his extensive combat service.
