Sean Russell Cutsforth was a 22-year-old soldier from Radford, Virginia. He served on active duty with the U.S. Army's Company C, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Specialist Cutsforth died on December 15, 2010, from wounds sustained in a hostile incident at Forward Operating Base Ghazni in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan. The base was a hub for U.S. and coalition forces in the volatile eastern region.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In 2010, the war was at its peak in terms of U.S. troop levels, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on provinces like Ghazni.
The Department of Defense announced his death in a press release on December 17, 2010. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin, Virginia.
