Their Story
Joseph Francesco Curreri was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army, assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Lewis, Washington. He was 27 years old and from Los Angeles, California. Prior to his deployment to the Philippines, he had also served in Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa as part of his unit's global mission profile.
On October 27, 2007, Curreri was participating in a maritime interdiction operation on Siet Lake, located on Jolo Island in the southern Philippines. According to U.S. military reports, the small boat he was in capsized during the mission. He and another soldier, Sergeant 1st Class Chadrick O. Dominguez, were thrown into the water. Dominguez was rescued, but Curreri did not surface and was later declared dead.

OEF-P was a joint U.S.-Philippine counterterrorism effort focused on advising and assisting the Armed Forces of the Philippines in combating groups like Abu Sayyaf and Jemaah Islamiyah on islands in the Sulu Archipelago, including Jolo.
The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death on October 29, 2007. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
Staff Sergeant Curreri is memorialized on a plaque at the 1st Special Forces Group compound at Fort Lewis and is listed on the Special Operations Memorial Wall at the U.S. Army Special Operations Command headquarters at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
