Their Story
Casey Dean Combs was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army, assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Before his deployment to Afghanistan, his service reportedly included assignments in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.
On April 12, 2007, Combs was killed in Miri, a village in the mountainous Zabul Province of southeastern Afghanistan. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was conducting combat operations when it came under hostile small-arms fire. He was 28 years old at the time of his death.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2007, the conflict was characterized by a significant Taliban-led insurgency, with intense fighting in the country's eastern and southern provinces, including Zabul.
Combs was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Meritorious Service Medal. He was survived by his wife and two children. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.
Staff Sergeant Combs is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Museum in Chehalis, Washington, and on online veterans' memorials. His name is also inscribed on the Auburn Veterans Memorial in his hometown.
