Staff Sgt. James David Bullard, 28, of Marion, South Carolina, was a U.S. Army National Guard soldier. He was killed by hostile fire in Spearwan Ghar, Afghanistan, on October 30, 2007.

Their Story

James David Bullard was a 28-year-old staff sergeant from Marion, South Carolina. He served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 263rd Armor Regiment, part of the South Carolina Army National Guard. His military service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On October 30, 2007, Bullard was killed during combat operations in the district of Spearwan Ghar, located in Afghanistan's Ghazni Province. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his unit was engaged by enemy small-arms fire. He was one of two soldiers from his battalion killed in separate incidents that day.

Bullard's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2007, the conflict was in a phase characterized by a resurgent Taliban and increasing use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and direct fire against coalition forces, particularly in eastern provinces like Ghazni.

Following his death, Bullard was posthumously promoted from sergeant to staff sergeant. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Marion. He was survived by his wife and children.

Bullard is memorialized on the South Carolina Fallen Heroes Memorial and the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum. His unit, the 1st Battalion, 263rd Armor Regiment, was later redesignated as an engineer battalion.
