U.S. Army Sergeant Joshua Charles Brennan, 22, of Ontario, Oregon, was killed in action on October 26, 2007, at a forward surgical team (FST) in Asadabad, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Joshua Charles Brennan was a 22-year-old sergeant from Ontario, Oregon, serving with Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, based in Vicenza, Italy. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2007 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On October 25, 2007, Brennan's squad was on a patrol in the village of Aranas in Kunar Province when it was ambushed by insurgent forces. Brennan was critically wounded by small arms fire. He was evacuated to the forward surgical team (FST) in Asadabad but succumbed to his wounds the following day, October 26.

His death occurred during a period of intense combat in Afghanistan's eastern provinces. The 173rd Airborne Brigade was engaged in counterinsurgency operations in remote, mountainous regions where Taliban and other militant groups maintained a strong presence. The battalion had sustained significant casualties in the preceding months.

Brennan was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for his actions during the ambush. According to the citation, he continued to return fire and direct his soldiers while severely wounded. He was buried with full military honors in Ontario, Oregon.

Brennan is memorialized on a monument in his hometown and in military unit histories. His actions during the ambush were cited in official accounts of the battle, which also resulted in the death of another soldier, Specialist Hugo V. Mendoza, and the wounding of several others, including Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta, who later received the Medal of Honor for his role in the same engagement.
