U.S. Army Captain David Albin Boris, 30, of Pottsville, Pennsylvania, was killed in hostile action in Bermel, Afghanistan, on November 12, 2007.

Their Story

David Albin Boris was a captain in the U.S. Army from Pottsville, Pennsylvania. He served with Troop A, 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, which was based in Schweinfurt, Germany. According to military records, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On November 12, 2007, Captain Boris was killed in Bermel, a district in Afghanistan's Paktika province. The Department of Defense stated his death resulted from hostile action. A contemporaneous report from the Associated Press indicated the incident involved an improvised explosive device that struck his vehicle during a patrol.

Boris's death occurred during a period of intensified combat in the Afghanistan War, known to the U.S. as Operation Enduring Freedom. By 2007, Taliban insurgents had regrouped, and the use of IEDs against coalition forces was increasing significantly, contributing to a rising annual casualty count.

The Army posthumously awarded Captain Boris the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He was survived by his wife and parents. A memorial service was held in Pottsville, where he was remembered by community members and fellow soldiers.

Captain Boris is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on the 173rd Airborne Brigade's memorial roll. His name is included on the Global War on Terrorism memorial at Fort Liberty, North Carolina (formerly Fort Bragg).
