Staff Sergeant Vincent James Bell, a 28-year-old U.S. Marine from Detroit, Michigan, was killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on November 30, 2011.

Their Story

Vincent James Bell was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 11th Marines, a field artillery regiment based out of Camp Pendleton, California, as part of the 1st Marine Division. The unit deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan.

On November 30, 2011, Bell was killed while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan that was a focal point of the war. According to the Department of Defense, his death was the result of hostile action. No further specifics regarding the incident were publicly released by the military.

Bell's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in Afghanistan, a decade after the initial U.S. invasion in October 2001. By late 2011, U.S. forces were engaged in a counterinsurgency campaign against Taliban and other militant forces, with Helmand province being one of the most contested areas.

Following his death, Bell's body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart medal. Public records and memorial pages indicate he was survived by family in Michigan.

Bell is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on several online veterans' memorial sites. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan and Iraq War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Detroit.
