Staff Sergeant Rayvon Battle Jr., 25, of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, was a U.S. Army engineer killed in action in Panjwai, Afghanistan, on November 13, 2012.

Their Story

Rayvon Battle Jr. was a 25-year-old Staff Sergeant from Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He served in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer with the 38th Engineer Company, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 7th Infantry Division, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

On November 13, 2012, Battle was killed by small arms fire while on patrol in the Panjwai district of Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated he was part of a dismounted patrol when his unit came under enemy fire.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2012, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting, particularly in southern provinces like Kandahar, as international forces worked to transition security responsibilities to Afghan national forces.

Battle's body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors. His death was reported by several national and local news outlets, including in his home state of North Carolina.

He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. Battle is remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated soldier and leader.
