Their Story
Jordan Stephen Bastean was a 19-year-old from Pekin, Illinois. He served as a Lance Corporal with the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, part of the 1st Marine Division based at Twentynine Palms, California. The unit deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 as part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
On October 23, 2011, Bastean was killed during a combat operation in Helmand province, a major center of the insurgency in southern Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died of wounds sustained while conducting combat operations.
Bastean's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His body was returned to the United States, and a funeral service was held in Pekin. The Tazewell County Board passed a resolution honoring his service, and his name was added to local memorials.
He is remembered on the Fallen Heroes Memorial in Pekin and is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Park of the Four Seasons in Washington, Illinois. His battalion, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, sustained significant casualties during its 2011 deployment.
