Lance Corporal Jason Nicholas Barfield, 22, of Ashford, Alabama, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on October 24, 2011.
Their Story
Jason Nicholas Barfield was a 22-year-old from Ashford, Alabama. He served as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to the 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, based out of Twentynine Palms, California. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
On October 24, 2011, Barfield was killed in Helmand province. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained while conducting combat operations. The Marine Corps listed the cause of death as hostile.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with a significant concentration of U.S. and allied forces engaged in Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold and center of opium production.
Barfield's death was announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His body was returned to Alabama, where he was buried with military honors.
Barfield is remembered on memorials in his home state and nationally. His name is inscribed on Panel 2W, Line 127 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia.
