Their Story
Private Anthony James White was from Columbia, South Carolina, and served on active duty in the U.S. Army. He was assigned to Company D, 82nd Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, based at Fort Drum, New York.
On March 25, 2007, Private White was killed in Baqubah, the capital of Iraq's Diyala province. The Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile fire. Specific details of the incident were not widely reported in national news archives.
White's death occurred during a period of intense sectarian violence and insurgent activity in Iraq, particularly in Diyala province. The years 2006 and 2007 were among the deadliest of the war for U.S. forces, following the bombing of the Al-Askari shrine in Samarra in February 2006, which escalated sectarian conflict.
Private White was posthumously promoted from Private to Private Second Class. He was survived by his mother and other family members in South Carolina.
He is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial and at Fort Drum. His name appears on Panel 17E, Line 109 of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
