U.S. Army Private Raymond Mitchell Werner, 21, of Boise, Idaho, died on February 8, 2007, in Karmah, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Their Story

Raymond Mitchell Werner was a 21-year-old soldier from Boise, Idaho. He served as a Private (PV2) with Company A, 321st Engineer Battalion, a U.S. Army Reserve unit based in his hometown.

On February 8, 2007, Werner was killed by hostile fire in Karmah, a city in Iraq's Anbar province west of Baghdad. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died during a dismounted patrol.

The year 2007 was one of the deadliest periods of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following the 2006 bombing of the al-Askari Mosque in Samarra, sectarian violence escalated sharply. U.S. forces, engaged in a major troop surge to stabilize the country, faced intense combat, particularly in Anbar province.

Werner's death was reported by the Department of Defense and local Idaho media. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Private First Class. His unit, the 321st Engineer Battalion, was mobilized for Iraq in 2006.

He is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial and by his unit. His name is inscribed on Panel 15E, Row 111 of the National Veterans Memorial in Birmingham, Alabama.
