Stephen Michael Wells was a 29-year-old Chief Warrant Officer from the small town of North Egremont, Massachusetts. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 4th Squadron, of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment based at Fort Carson, Colorado.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Wells died on February 25, 2004, in Habbaniyah, Iraq. The town is located in Anbar province, west of Baghdad. Official records state he was killed in action, reportedly during a firefight with insurgent forces in the area.
Wells's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By early 2004, the declared end of major combat operations had given way to a sustained and growing insurgency, with Anbar province becoming a focal point of resistance and intense fighting.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in regional news outlets. He was survived by his family in Massachusetts, who received his posthumously awarded Purple Heart and other service medals.
