Christopher Ralph Webb was a 28-year-old Staff Sergeant from Winchester, California. He served with the Army's HHT, 2nd Squadron, 5th Cavalry Regiment, based out of Fort Hood, Texas.
On March 7, 2007, Webb was killed in Baghdad, Iraq. The Department of Defense reported his death as a result of hostile action. According to a contemporaneous report from the Associated Press, he was one of three soldiers killed when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) in the Iraqi capital.
Webb died during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. The war's stated objectives included the disarmament of Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction and the removal of its government. By 2007, the conflict had entered a period of intense sectarian violence and a U.S. troop surge aimed at stabilizing the country.
Webb's death was reported by multiple news outlets at the time. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart, according to the Military Times' Honor the Fallen database.
He is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial website and is listed on the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) casualty roster. His name appears on Panel 17E, Line 109 of the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Sacramento, which also honors those lost in later conflicts.
