Justin James Watts was a 20-year-old Marine from Crownsville, Maryland. He served as a corporal with Headquarters and Service Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, part of the 1st Marine Division based at Camp Pendleton, California.
Corporal Watts was killed on January 14, 2006, in the city of Hadithah, located in Iraq's restive Al Anbar province. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained during combat operations.
His death occurred during a period of intense violence in the Iraq War, particularly in the Sunni Triangle region. The years 2005 through 2007 were the deadliest of the conflict for U.S. forces, marked by a potent insurgency and widespread sectarian violence following the 2003 invasion.
