Their Story
Forrest John Waterbury was a 25-year-old soldier from Richmond, Texas. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company D, 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, based at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
On March 14, 2007, Waterbury was killed in Balad, Iraq. According to the Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained from enemy small arms fire during a dismounted security patrol.
His death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a major conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. The war involved sustained combat between coalition forces, Iraqi security forces, and various insurgent groups.
The Army announced his death on March 16, 2007. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings. His body was returned to the United States for burial.
Waterbury is memorialized on the Iraq War Veterans Memorial and other online tributes maintained by veterans' groups. His unit, the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor, continued its deployment in Iraq following his death.
