Their Story

William Thomas Warren was a 48-year-old Sergeant Major from North Little Rock, Arkansas. He served with Company B, 1st Battalion, 185th Aviation Regiment of the Arkansas Army National Guard, based in his hometown. The unit was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

On January 20, 2007, Warren was killed in Baghdad. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter he was aboard crashed northeast of the Iraqi capital. The military stated the crash was not due to mechanical failure and was under investigation. All 12 personnel on board died. The incident was later attributed by officials to hostile fire.

Operation Iraqi Freedom began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By early 2007, the conflict was in a phase characterized by intense sectarian violence and a major U.S. troop surge aimed at stabilizing the country. U.S. and coalition forces faced persistent attacks from insurgent groups using improvised explosive devices, small arms, and surface-to-air fire.

Warren's death was reported by national and local Arkansas media. The Arkansas National Guard publicly confirmed the loss. He was among at least 3,091 U.S. service members killed in Iraq by that point in the war, according to casualty records.

Sergeant Major Warren is memorialized on the Arkansas Fallen Heroes Memorial in North Little Rock. His name is also inscribed on Panel 2E, Row 123 of the Iraq War Memorial at the Veterans Park and Memorial in Bakersfield, California, which honors those who died in the conflict.
