Sgt. 1st Class Mark Carlyle Warren was a 44-year-old soldier from La Grande, Oregon. He served with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 116th Armored Cavalry Regiment, part of the Oregon Army National Guard's Task Force Olympia.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Warren died on January 31, 2005, at Kirkuk Air Base in northern Iraq. The official casualty report states he was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle while he was on a patrol mission.
Warren's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By early 2005, the war had entered a phase of intense insurgency, characterized by widespread use of IEDs against coalition and Iraqi forces. Kirkuk, a city with mixed ethnic populations, was a frequent site of attacks.
