Their Story
Richard Price Waller was a 22-year-old Marine corporal from Fort Worth, Texas. He served with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 5 of the 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Pendleton, California.
On April 7, 2006, Waller was killed by enemy small-arms fire during combat operations in Abu Ghuraib, a city in Iraq's Anbar province west of Baghdad. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death the following day.
Waller's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, the U.S.-led military intervention that began in March 2003. By early 2006, the conflict had entered a phase of intense sectarian violence and insurgency, with Anbar province being a focal point for attacks against coalition and Iraqi forces.
