Their Story
Peter Daniel Wagler was an 18-year-old soldier from Partridge, Kansas. He served as a Corporal in Company D, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Task Force Iron Horse) based at Fort Hood, Texas.
On January 23, 2006, the Department of Defense announced that Wagler died in Baghdad, Iraq, from wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations. Another soldier, Specialist Jacob M. Simpson, was killed in the same attack.
Wagler's death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a period from 2005 to 2007 that saw some of the conflict's highest levels of violence. The insurgency against U.S.-led coalition forces and Iraqi government troops was widespread, with frequent use of roadside bombs and direct attacks.
His body was returned to Kansas, where he was buried in the Partridge Cemetery. The Reno County Veterans Memorial later included his name.
At 18, Wagler was among the youngest American service members to die in the Iraq War. He is remembered on memorials in his home state and nationally at the Iraq War Memorial in Washington, D.C.
