Their Story

On April 8, 2004, Corporal Wafford was killed by hostile action in Iraq's Al Anbar Province. The Department of Defense casualty announcement did not specify the exact nature of the incident, but his death occurred during a period of intense combat operations in the region.

Wafford's death came during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a conflict that began with a U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. By April 2004, U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in major offensives against insurgent strongholds, particularly in the Sunni Triangle areas that included Al Anbar Province.
