Their Story

Kenneth Gerald Grimm Von Ronn was a 20-year-old soldier from Bloomingburg, New York. He served as a sergeant with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment, part of the 42nd Infantry Division's Task Force Baghdad.

On January 6, 2005, Sergeant Von Ronn was killed by hostile fire in Baghdad. According to the Department of Defense, he was on patrol in the Iraqi capital when his unit came under attack.

His death occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom, a period of intense counterinsurgency warfare. The years 2005 to 2007 were among the deadliest of the conflict for U.S. forces, with frequent attacks on patrols and convoys in urban areas like Baghdad.

The Department of Defense announced his death on January 8, 2005. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant. His remains were returned to the United States for burial.

Sergeant Von Ronn is memorialized on the Iraq War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum and by his unit. His name is included on casualty lists documenting service members killed in 2005.
