Chief Warrant Officer Travis Ryan Tamayo was a 32-year-old military intelligence officer from Brownsville, Texas. He was assigned to Company C, 202nd Military Intelligence Battalion, 513th Military Intelligence Brigade, based at Fort Gordon, Georgia, and deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.
Tamayo died on September 16, 2016, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed in a non-combat related incident. The official investigation concluded his death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Operation Inherent Resolve was the U.S.-led military intervention against the Islamic State (ISIL) in Iraq and Syria, beginning in August 2014. The campaign involved airstrikes and support for local ground forces. The United Arab Emirates served as a key logistics and support hub for the coalition.
The Army confirmed his death in a press release. He was posthumously promoted from Warrant Officer 1 to Chief Warrant Officer 2. His death was one of 107 U.S. service member fatalities recorded during Operation Inherent Resolve.
Tamayo was remembered by his unit for his professionalism and dedication. His name is inscribed on the memorial at Fort Gordon honoring soldiers from the 513th Military Intelligence Brigade who died in service.
