Their Story
James Gregory Sartor was a Sergeant Major assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Carson, Colorado. A native of Teague, Texas, he was 40 years old at the time of his death. The U.S. Department of Defense stated he was on his fourth combat deployment.
Sartor died on July 13, 2019, from wounds sustained during combat operations in Maimanah, the capital of Faryab Province in northern Afghanistan. According to U.S. military statements, his unit was engaged by enemy small arms fire. No other U.S. service members were reported killed in the incident.
His death occurred under Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in January 2015. The mission's stated objectives were to train, advise, and assist Afghan security forces and conduct counterterrorism operations. Faryab Province was an area of sustained insurgent activity.
