Staff Sergeant Diobanjo Soriano San Agustin was a 32-year-old soldier from National City, California. He served with Company B, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Carson, Colorado.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, San Agustin died on September 4, 2018, from wounds sustained during combat operations in Bagram, Parwan Province, Afghanistan. The official release stated he was killed by small arms fire.
His death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) combat role in January 2015. The operation's stated objectives included training, advising, and assisting Afghan forces, and conducting counter-terrorism missions.
Following his death, the Army posthumously awarded San Agustin the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His remains were returned to the United States, and services were held in California.
