Douglas James Riney was a 26-year-old U.S. Army sergeant from Fairview, Illinois. He served with Company J, Support Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, based at Fort Hood, Texas.
On October 19, 2016, Sergeant Riney and an American civilian contractor, Michael G. Sauro, were shot and killed by a man wearing an Afghan National Army uniform in Kabul. The incident occurred outside a NATO facility in the city's western district. The attacker was reportedly shot and killed by Afghan forces.
Riney's death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan that succeeded Operation Enduring Freedom in January 2015. The mission's stated objectives included training, advising, and assisting Afghan security forces and conducting counter-terrorism operations.
According to a Department of Defense news release, Riney was supporting Operation Freedom's Sentinel. His death was reported by major news outlets, including the Associated Press and Military Times. He was survived by his wife and two young children.
